What is an employer practice laboratory?
In the employer practice laboratories, the use of AI-supported assistance systems is tested under real working conditions together with rehabilitation facilities and companies in the general labor market (employers).
Together with the implementation partners, we are investigating how technologies available on the market can be used to facilitate the transition from vocational rehabilitation to the general labour market and make workplaces more inclusive.
For this purpose, the technologies are tested over a longer period of time by rehabilitation participants or employees with (severe) disabilities in jobs in the general labor market. The aim of this participatory testing is to develop transferable solutions to strengthen participation and for more inclusion of people with (severe) disabilities in working life.
The implementation partners (rehabilitation facilities and companies) can decide for themselves which needs they want to address, which AI-supported assistance systems they want to use in a practical laboratory and how many people will test the technology.

- Strengthening the participation of people with (severe) disabilities in working life
- Design of inclusive workplaces
- Improving the self-determination of people with (severe) disabilities instead of performance control or assessment
- Addressing current challenges in rehabilitation facilities and the general labor market
- Opportunities for the sustainability and transferability of the tested solutions
How can rehabilitation facilities and companies get involved?
Over the course of the project, a total of three employer practical laboratories will be implemented with various companies and rehabilitation facilities. Members of the Federal Association of Vocational Training Centers (BAG BBW) have already been able to apply for the first practical laboratory together with a company in the general labor market. Members of the Federal Association of German Vocational Training Centers (BV BFW) and members of the Federal Association of Workshops for People with Disabilities (BAG WfbM) can apply together with a company in autumn/winter 2024 or spring 2025 as implementation partners of a practical laboratory.
